AI engines now cite LinkedIn first for professional questions
Profound analyzed about 1.4 million citations across ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI, Copilot and Perplexity. Between November and February, LinkedIn climbed from outside the top twenty to the most cited domain for professional queries on every platform measured. One more shift sits inside that number. Citations of member profiles fell by more than half, while citations of posts and articles rose to over a third. The engines are quoting what people publish, not what their title says.

The sentence they repeat about you used to travel by word of mouth. Now a machine drafts it first, and it drafts from your published words, not your job title. A leader who has written nothing has handed the machine an empty page. This is not a content-marketing chore. It is the new version of the oldest rule: the room reads whatever is available, and now the room includes every AI a recruiter, board member or new boss quietly asks.
Here is the possibility inside the shift. A large new class of senior seats is being created at exactly your level, with employers posting around 330 AI strategy roles a week and nearly half of them Director level. The leaders winning those seats are the ones whose record already reads in that language: what they decided, what shipped, what it changed. If your published record still describes the function you run, it is describing the seat being restructured, not the one being created.

Worth four minutes this week. Open any AI chatbot and ask it what it would tell a board member about your area of expertise, then ask whose voices it is drawing on. Read the answer the way a stranger would. Somewhere in that answer is the space your name should occupy, and every week you publish nothing, the machine fills it with someone else.
