UNEDITD Presents TOP PERSPECTIVES EDITION 08 · WEEK OF AUGUST 31, 2026 MADDY VISWANATH · CRAFT YOUR CONFIDENCE |
Welcome back to Top Perspectives. One story this week, because it changes what your title means. |
|
This week A $2.9 billion deal, and nobody was laid off Eli Lilly announced on August 31 that it will acquire Merida Biosciences for up to $2.875 billion in cash, upfront plus milestone payments. Merida is clinical stage. Its lead program, MER511, is in Phase 1 for Graves' disease and thyroid eye disease. The deal is expected to close in the fourth quarter. No job cuts were announced. |
| Maddy's read Nobody loses a job on a day like this, and that is exactly why it is worth reading slowly. A small team wakes up inside one of the largest pharmaceutical companies on earth, and every title in it quietly changes meaning. Head of something at a clinical-stage company becomes one of several directors in a function. Nobody was demoted and nobody was told anything. An org chart was drawn by people who have never met them, working from documents rather than conversations. In HR you have seen this every time: the integration team maps roles from job descriptions and headcount files, on a deadline, months before anyone is introduced. Here is the possibility inside it. Every deal like this one ends the same way, with two org charts becoming one, and the seats in the new structure go to whoever is already legible in it. Being acquired is usually good news financially and almost always a reset professionally. The people who come out with their standing intact are the ones whose judgment was written down somewhere findable before the deal was announced, because that is the only version of them the mapping team can see. |

The move this week Four minutes, and do it before the quarter turns. In your next one to one, ask your manager this: "If someone asked you to describe what I own in one sentence, what would you say?" Then say nothing while they answer. Write their sentence down next to the one you would have given. The distance between those two sentences is the whole risk, and right now it is still the only part of this you can change. |

Tool of the week · The Readiness Score Somebody is going to describe you in one line this quarter, and they will do it without asking you first. You should probably know what that line says. The Readiness Score reads your LinkedIn profile the way a talent review reads it and hands back the version of you that arrives ahead of you, in about two minutes. |
See you next Monday. Maddy |
P.S. If you have been through an acquisition you already know the quiet part. Forward this to one leader who is about to find out. |
